HallingSpranget – Norway’s longest family-friendly MTB trail

The 17 km long ride goes from the mountain all the way down to the centre of Nesbyen, with a drop of almost 1000 metres. The views and experiences along the way are spectacular—and the trail can also be enjoyed on foot.

The trail is rated blue (moderately challenging) and is suitable for those with some experience and endurance. A full-suspension trail bike is recommended for optimal comfort, especially for beginners. The recommended minimum age is 7 years. Most families take between 2 and 4 hours to complete the descent.

The FjellLinken bike shuttle bus transports you and your bike from Nesbyen center to the starting point on the mountain. The bus operates daily during the summer season and on weekends in the fall. If you wish to ride outside the bus schedule, alternative transport methods are available. Prefer to hike the trail? Read more about the hiking experience here.

Incredibly cool flow path. A journey through different biotopes. Starting with a little hilly terrain before it goes almost completely over to clean outbound. Suitable for families with children who have some skills on the bike or those who want to push on with great speed over jumps, obstacles and dosed turns. Many nice stops along the way, arranged with benches and maps (as well as drills on large wheels if the accident should be out). Here a lot of work is put down to satisfy a wide range of needs. Recommended!

Awesome for all Three experienced riders came from Hemsedal Bike park, where we pushed through the red trail. We initially thought of Hallingspranget as a must-see, and a good warmup, but ended up having loads of fun and endless flow. The variation, the nature, the view and the flowspeed. Just awesome!

Perfect to start Hallingspranget in a good spirit :) The driver secured all bikes himself, we did not need to do anything. He was present at the pick-up location well ahead of time and the trip started exactly when planned. The shuttle is very comfortable.

Excellent ride! Excellent ride! I’ve done it three times now, and each time has been beautiful. Not hard but scary for novices. So expect to use a lot of time if with novices or children, bring snacks and use the many lookout points on your way down.

First week of July 2025 Lovely machine trail biking, a little easier and shorter climbs when traversing the beginning, then it's just downhill in lovely serpentines and nature shifts from open mountain to lush forest towards the end. Some nice stops / rest areas on the way down.Well worth a visit, highly recommended!

Great experience. This was Morro. My wife 70 years and I 78 years took this trip as an experience on our anniversary. Great experience but tiring. We spent 2 hours with 4 small breaks. Those who have made this have really done a good job. Can be strongly recommended.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is HallingSpranget?
HallingSpranget is Norway’s longest family-friendly trail designed and built for trail biking. It runs from the top of Nesfjellet (1,100 meters above sea level) to Nesbyen center (150 meters above sea level).

How long does it take to bike HallingSpranget?
Fast cyclists take about 1 hour to descend. Families with children typically spend between 2 and 4 hours from top to bottom.

How difficult is it to bike HallingSpranget?
The ride requires endurance and basic cycling skills. The trail is rated blue, indicating a moderate difficulty level. It mostly features predictable gravel surfaces and is never very steep. However, shorter technical sections and surprises like fallen trees, rocks, loose surfaces, and ditches after rain can occur. It’s important for cyclists to adjust their speed according to their abilities. The recommended minimum age is 7 years for children with basic cycling experience. Younger cyclists should have extensive biking experience.

How do you get to the top of HallingSpranget?
You can take the FjellLinken bike shuttle bus from the center, drive your own car to the top, or ride up with an e-bike. Find alternative guiding and shuttling services, see Visitnesbyen.com.

We’re a large group or want to bike when FjellLinken isn’t running. What should we do?
Use the contact form at Visitnesbyen.no to send a group shuttle request to all providers offering bike shuttling in Nesbyen.

Is there a cost to use HallingSpranget?
HallingSpranget is free to use. To maintain the trail in good condition, regular upkeep is necessary. When you take the FjellLinken shuttle bus, NOK 50 of the ticket price goes toward maintenance. If you don’t use FjellLinken, voluntary contributions—e.g., NOK 50 per person—are appreciated via Vipps #35402 or through this website. Thank you!

Can you walk HallingSpranget?
Yes, the trail can be both walked and biked in both directions. Cyclists must yield to pedestrians. Please be considerate of each other!

Can I use my regular bike?
A mountain bike with a suspension fork, good brakes, and sturdy tires is recommended. A full-suspension bike isn’t necessary but makes the ride more comfortable and safer, especially if you’re inexperienced. Suitable bikes can be rented at Nesbyen Ski og Sykkel / Furi in Nesbyen.

How long is HallingSpranget?
The trail has an official length of 17 km (accurate measurements conducted by professionals). Due to the many turns and elevation changes, measurements taken with mobile phones or GPS watches may show a shorter length. The trail has an ascent of 142 meters and a descent of 1,033 meters. See the elevation profile and trail map here.

Can I bring my dog on HallingSpranget or FjellLinken?
There is a year-round leash requirement on designated trails in Nesbyen municipality, including HallingSpranget. If you’re biking, bringing a dog is discouraged—for safety reasons and the experience of other users. The FjellLinken shuttle bus allows dogs on board only if no other passengers are allergic. This is determined at the time of boarding, so tickets should be purchased just before departure in consultation with the driver. Dogs cannot occupy their own seats.
